A couple of small news tidbits today. First off, check out this two-minute PSA/promotional spot for Vital Engineering, as narrated by Tricia Helfer. Vital Engineering founder Dean G. Turgeon is one of the “Green Team Players” of Tricia’s environmentally conscious house project at TriciaGreen.com.

Tricia also tweeted recently via her official Twitter account @trutriciahelfer about just having completed filming 10 episodes for TNT’s undercover cop drama Dark Blue, Season 2. As most of you will know, Tricia will be debuting on the show this August as FBI Agent Alex Rice. Via Twitter:

Last day of filming Dark Blue for this season. Can’t believe how fast 10 episodes go!! Feels like I just started.

Can’t wait for the promotion to kick start!

As you may have noticed, there has been very little Tricia news to report of late, hence the few updates. Today, however, I was alerted to a brief but interesting interview Tricia Helfer did for Greenr.ca regarding her upcoming off-the-grid home in Alberta, Canada. Excerpt courtesy of Greenr.ca:

What advice do you have for people aspiring to go green?
Helfer: I’d say start reading. There is so much out there but so little utilized in the day to day life. It’s shocking, actually, how much more could be easily done. I am certainly the lazy partner of this build, but my husband has done a massive amount of reading and educating himself. Really, I’d say to start small and build from there. It is overwhelming to try to all of a sudden be green, but if you start small, you can build from there. Every little bit makes a difference if everyone starts.

Do you think it’s feasible for the average person to build an off the grid home?
Helfer: Honestly, at this point, no. It is definitely more expensive upfront which is a huge road block. It would save money overtime but the majority of the population doesn’t have that extra money upfront. I wish I had a different answer to this question but from what I’m experiencing right now with trying to budget for the house, it is more expensive than building traditionally. Hopefully that will change soon, or the notion of the bigger picture and the long haul will make more people take the plunge and put a little more money in the beginning in order to save later. It would be nice if it was only environmental concerns and I’m sure everyone would build green, but unfortunately it’s a cost concern too, and right now it’s more expensive.

Tricia is doing her share to promote environmental awareness and has launched TriciaGreen.com! The site is aimed at showcasing the progress of her and her family’s most recent environmental project – building a “green” house in the Canadian province of Alberta, where Tricia grew up as a child and teen. From TriciaGreen.com:

Let’s start at this basic premise. I know very little about “being green” and I am far from (and don’t profess to be) an expert on the subject. That said, I feel it’s time to start doing my part to make sure that my impact on the environment is minimized and if in my pursuits I can inspire others to do their part – then that will be very rewarding.

Tara (my sister), Jonathan (my husband) and I have created this site to chronicle the adventures of building a “green, off-the-grid” house in central Alberta where I grew up. We hope to share things that we learn along the way and hope that by sharing, others will be inspired to apply these techniques in their own lives. Everything that you see on this site is based upon something that we’ve considered incorporating into the Alberta House. Ultimately some of the technologies will be feasible and can be used, while others will not be incorporated into the design.

Why I’m Helping
When I look back at my childhood, when I think back to the days growing up on the farm, I find myself smiling. I was instilled with an appreciation and admiration for the land, family and honor. My goal is to build a house that respects the land in it’s entirety. To live in comfort while respecting the very view that I build my deck to overlook.
