On October 21 2010, former Battlestar Galactica co-stars, fellow motorcycling enthusiasts and best friends Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff embarked on the “LA La Ride”, a 10-day motorcycle ride from Los Angeles, California to New Orleans, Louisiana, as part of their new charity company Acting Outlaws. Tracing the 2,500-mile Easy Rider route from LA to NOLA and concluding at the Voodoo Music Festival, the ride was aimed at raising funds and awareness for the Deepwater Horizon BP oill spill in the Gulf of Mexico, for which The Acting Outlaws partnered with The Gulf Restoration Network, The Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Economical Health and their collaborative initiative, The Gulf Future Campaign.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (aka. the BP oil spill and the Macondo blowout) is an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which flowed for three months in 2010, the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The spill stemmed from a sea-floor oil gusher that resulted from the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion, killing 11 men working on the platform and injuring 17 others. On July 15, the leak was stopped by capping the gushing wellhead, but not until it had released about 4.9 million barrels, or 185 million gallons, of crude oil into the sea. On September 19, the relief well process was successfully completed and the U.S. federal government declared the well “effectively dead”.
Although the oil well was successfully blocked, the disastrous environmental effects of the spill are expected to last decades, as is the ongoing restoration process in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill continues to cause extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries, and in late November ’10, the total amount of Louisiana shoreline impacted by the oil grew from 287 in July to 320 miles.
However, since the cap went up on the well, the media attention for it has diminished dramatically. Therefore, to remind people of the still ongoing tragedy in the Gulf and to do their part for the Gulf cause, the “Acting Outlaws” Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff chose the BP oil spill disaster cause for their first ever Acting Outlaws charity ride, the “LA La Ride”.

For the ride, the Acting Outlaws teamed up with the Gulf Restoration Network, the Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Economical Health, and their joint Gulf restoration initiative, the Gulf Future Campaign:
• The Gulf Restoration Network — is the only environmental advocacy group exclusively focused on the health of the Gulf of Mexico. Their 16 year history has focused on uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf for future generations. Since the earliest days of the BP oil drilling disaster GRN has been independently monitoring the response with research, boat excursions and flyovers to hold BP and the federal government accountable for a full clean up and restoration effort. • The Gulf Coast Fund — is a grantmaking institution that supports progressive movement building in the Gulf Coast region. Founded in the wake of the 2005 hurricane season, the Gulf Coast Fund has roots in the coastal communities most hard-hit by BP’s crude oil, and the fisheries disaster it created. The Gulf Coast Fund has created an emergency fund to empower a community-led response to the BP drilling disaster and has distributed $200,000 to 32 organizations so far. • The Gulf Future Campaign — was created shortly after the BP oil spill of 2010 with a mission of providing the long-term support needed to protect the environment and the distinct culture of the Gulf Coast for future generations. Working together through the Gulf Future Campaign, the Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Ecological Health and Gulf Restoration Network are partnering up with other organizations and communities across the country to strengthen their voice and make sure that the needs of the Gulf Coast are heard and met. Gulf Future is the only campaign focused exclusively on the health of the Gulf Coast and the people who live there. Understanding that local communities provide a critical perspective on how the Gulf of Mexico should be restored, they offer unique insight and expertise on the needs of the affected communities.
