NOW Toronto has a small but terrific feature with Tricia Helfer and her A Beginner’s Guide to Endings co-star Jason Jones on the making of the film, which just landed in select Canadian theaters. Full article (with audio clip) under the cut.

Q&A: Jason Jones and Tricia Helfer
By NORMAN WILNER
Jason Jones and Tricia Helfer don’t share a lot of screen time in Jonathan Sobol’s A Beginner’s Guide To Endings, but they’ve been paired up to launch the film at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.
Fortunately, the two Canadian actors — he’s best known as a correspondent for The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, she for her work as various Cylons on Battlestar Galactica — have bonded over their work on the movie and are happy to discuss their trial by fire in Niagara Falls. Jones, Scott Caan and Paulo Costanzo play doomed brothers; Helfer turns up as Caan’s old flame who’s not exactly thrilled to have him resurface in her life.
For a comedy, this is a movie with a pretty dark heart, opening with three guys learning they could drop dead any minute. How did you find laughs in that situation?
Jones: I can only speak for myself, but you never set out to be funny. You just set out to play the scenes real, and hopefully the funny comes.
Helfer: Yeah, it’s a tough tone. If you go one way, it’s too dark and not funny; if you go the other way, it comes off as cheesy and stilted. But Jonathan [Sobol] had been lovely enough to write a whole synopsis of how he wanted to film it. So I read that first, and then read the script, so it just kind of clicked.
Jones: That’s right, he sent you guys all letters, right?
Helfer: Yeah.
Jones: Yeah, he just called me. It was like, “You want this?” [laughing] I didn’t get the respect they all got.
Sobol talks about making this movie by the seat of his pants. Is he exaggerating?
Jones: I showed up, did a costume fitting — did it in the trailer. Nothing fit; I had, like, jeans that were pinned together. I wore a hat throughout the movie, except for the first scene [we shot] because they didn’t have the hat. They threw me into the most emotional scene in the movie, so it was rough. You were just, like, run or get left behind. I think we ran.
Helfer: I was finishing up something in L.A. and was going to another film right afterward, so I literally had four days. Got in, did the fitting, had dinner with Jonathan and his wife and Scott Caan, and started filming the next day. So at least I got to have dinner.

At last some news on A Beginner’s Guide to Endings! According to the Orange County Register, Jonathan Sobol’s Endings will be heading to the Newport Beach Film Festival on May 5.
The Newport Beach Film Festival has announced the lineup for its 12th annual gathering, April 28-May 5. Organizers are planning to screen more than 350 films from 45-plus countries, including a number of world, U.S. and West Coast premieres.
[...] The closing film will be A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, a comedy/drama starring Harvey Keitel, Scott Caan, Tricia Helfer, J.K. Simmons, Paul Costanzo and Jason Jones. That movie will screen at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Regency Lido Theater, followed by a closing-night party at the Lido Village.
At this point we don’t know whether or not any of the film’s stars are expected or planning to attend, but we’ll of course keep our eyes peeled for details and possible photos. Good to hear things are moving forward with the film, though!

Tribute.ca has a fantastic, great quality video clip of Tricia Helfer at yesterday’s Toronto International Film Festival A Beginner’s Guide to Endings Press Junket in Canada, where Tricia answered a lot of questions regarding the film, her supporting role of Miranda, her co-stars and working with them, and also touched on Battlestar Galactica, Dark Blue, Lie to Me, Two and a Half Men, Phase One (very fleetingly) and Open House. The video unfortunately can’t be embedded here at this point, so please head over to Tribute.ca via the below screen cap to watch it:

Speaking of screen caps, since actual pics from the junket have really been nowhere to be found so far, except for this tweeted picture from Tricia herself, we’ve instead made a batch of pretty sharp-quality Tricia captures of the aforementioned video. As you can see, Tricia looked nothing short of divine at the event in a navy blue, satin one-shoulder David Meister cocktail dress and Swarovksi earrings. Be sure to check out the pics!

Check out this first trailer from the Internet Movie Database for writer-director Jonathan Sobol’s feature film debut, A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, in which Tricia Helfer stars opposite Harvey Keitel, Scott Caan, J.K. Simmons and Paulo Costanzo. Although the trailer focuses mainly on the key characters, Tricia is featured in a couple of shots — the first look we’ve had at her in her as-of-yet untitled role.
Unfortunately, the video can’t be embedded here at this point, so please head over to the Internet Movie Database to watch it. A couple of screen captures of Tricia’s shots have also been uploaded to the gallery — big thanks to Roberta @ Kate Winslet Fan for her help with these.

In related news, another one of Tricia’s upcoming films, Phase One, which was announced as far back as in November 2009, has at last gotten an Internet Movie Database-page. Although the page doesn’t provide us with a lot of information that we didn’t already know, Tricia’s character does now have a name – “Dr. Wilcox”.
Neither film has yet to our knowledge an exact release date.

The Hollywood Reporter (a generally reliable source for movie news) reports Tricia Helfer will be starring opposite Dennis Hopper, Scott Caan and J.K. Simmons in A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, the silver screen debut of writer-director Jonathan Sobol. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Dennis Hopper, Scott Caan, Tricia Helfer and J.K. Simmons are boarding A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, a dark comedy written and directed by newcomer Jonathan Sobol.
Endings centers on three brothers who, upon learning they only have a few days left to live, set off to reverse a lifetime of mistakes. Hopper and Simmons are playing the brothers’ father and uncle, respectively, while Caan is one of the brothers. Helfer is Caan’s girlfriend, a woman with a dangerous past.
Shooting is due to start the last week of October in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Sobol hails from the region, and Endings is something of an homage to his hometown.
Sounds intriguing, no? Congratulations on the exciting new project, Tricia!
